Day 2 - Mission Viejo, CA

Leaving the La Quinta!
Following Kyle over the grapevine. You can barely see the mountains with all the fire/smog. We won't miss this air quality thats for sure!

Now that the troubles of yesterday are behind us time to go pick up the car tow dolly and get on the road! We made it to Santa Fe Springs around noon and were able to pick up the tow dolly and get a demonstration on how to set it up and how to load the car. They were very helpful and made sure to go over every detail.

All in the RV together with the Camry in tow
Toby on his couch. Hes content.

We headed to Mission Viejo next, car in tow, and were going to park the car in the cul-de-sac by my grandmas apartment, thinking it would be easier to get in and out of there than our parents neighborhood. We were wrong. Before we could even park it, we were stuck and needed to unhitch the car. The downside to the tow dolly is you can’t back up with a car on the dolly. Which means you need to make smart decisions and plan out your routes in advanced so you don’t get stuck in a corner you can’t get out of. It took us a while just to get the car off the dolly since the dolly was following the curve of the cul-de-sac the car had to come off in the same curve without scratching against the dolly itself. By then my dad had shown up and we got the car off now we just had to get the RV with dolly attached out of the cul-de-sac. Dad got behind the wheel and tried a 35 point turn to get out of there but no amount of maneuvering could get the rig in the angle we needed to make it out of the curve. The three of us ended up picking up the dolly and inching it over little by little to straighten it out a bit. That was a mistake. The 3rd attempt of picking up the dolly and moving it over, I felt my back go out and I was done for the day. Moving the dolly over did help, dad was able to clear the curb and get the rig out of the cul-de-sac. But I was in so much pain and with the Camry off the dolly already I just drove it home to my parents house so I could go lay down and left dad and Kyle to finish up. Now we are delaying our trip yet another day because I can’t walk.

Kyle comes back to my parents house and says that on his way over a piece of the dolly flew off and is in the fast lane of Antonio. This dolly is turing out to be a nightmare. I can’t believe we just spent all this money on something that already is falling apart. Dad and nick were able to retrieve it and brought the piece home, banged out the dents and were able to put it back on the dolly. But if this had happened away from Mission Viejo, that piece would have been lost forever.

The piece that flew off the tow dolly.

We will see how I’m doing tomorrow but we may have to push our trip another day. I feel like there are some forces trying to keep us in California!

Toby clearly is fine with staying in Mission Viejo another day!
