Doors and Drawers

We want to paint all the "wood" looking parts of the PUP. But when it came to the cabinet doors and drawers we had some peeling paper issues. Basically this "wood" isn't actual wood it is just a plastic paper veneer glued to everything. Almost all of the paper on the doors and drawers were peeling in the corners or completely comping off so we decided to just rebuild all the doors and drawers.

One thing I made sure to do before we started was label each door and drawer then I took a photo of all the labels so I know where everything goes when its time to put it all back together.

I also measured out each piece and drew up a spec sheet in Illustrator for reference when cutting. This also helped us determine how much plywood we needed to cut all these pieces.

One of the doors had all this info on the back of it so I was sure to take a photo of that as well for future reference.

We used about a half sheet of 1/2" plywood to cut 10 doors and drawer fronts. The plywood we choose was a higher grade so sanding them didn't take too long.

We also cut 40 pieces of 1/4" x 1.5" trim to make borders on the doors and drawers. The trim was pre-primed so we only needed to prime the doors and drawers.

I gave each piece front 2 coats of primer front and back. The primer we are using is Zinsser Bulls Eye Interior Latex Primer (cheaper to buy on Amazon).

After everything was all primed it was time to glue the trim pieces on. Lots of clamping and waiting for glue to dry here. This took me a whole day to finish all 10 pieces.

Once the trim was dried I used a paintable wood filler by Minwax to make the seams look flush then sanded those areas down.

Kyle routed the edges of the doors with the trim on so they are rounded over a bit which finishes them off nicely. Then I painted them with the Sherwin-Williams Icy Avalanche paint we bought from Lowes.

After soaking all the hardware in vinegar overnight and scrubbing down the bigger rust spots I sprayed them with Rust-Oleum Rust Rust Reformer Spray in black. This should help prevent any rust coming back. I made sure to spray all the screws too.

Here are some doors and drawers installed with the freshly painted hardware! We love the look, so much cleaner and everything works as it should!
